coffee vs. milk splash: a physics lesson

LOL! I hopped on the computer this morning to find 27 comments on my milk splash. I'm gathering you think I'm some sort of evil genius, or incredibly stupid. Yes?

In my defense: Yesterday I did a little test run of the milk splash with a mug full of water, sitting on a kitchen towel. It made a little bloop up in the air and that was it.

Did you know that whole milk has different properties than water? Me neither. I guess it's heavier, or denser...whatever, it's splashier. And that led to the gigantic mess. Whoops!

A few of you asked for the how-to. So as not to disappoint, here is what you need to make the splash: (hard boiled of course)

Still not grasping the physical differences between whole milk and water, I tried this morning with coffee.

So that was kind of cool, but not as splashy as milk.

You're laughing because I'm out on my deck, aren't you?

And because the baby is still sleeping (and because I know you don't want this mess on your deck)...

Would you guys give me a free pass on responding to comments today? I'm so sorry to do that...I appreciate your comments so so so much! :-) This week is starting to get away from me, and I need to be off the computer for next couple of days.

Oh geez! I almost forgot the most important part: my settings.
Today's settings outside were:
TV mode - 1/800
aperture 4.5
ISO 800

Yesterday's settings inside were:
TV mode - 1/400
aperture 2.8
ISO 1250 (yep, 1,250)

In my kitchen there's not much available light, and my ISO was already 1,250. I should have used a faster shutter speed and a smaller aperture (bigger number, like 4.5), but I didn't want to raise the ISO any higher.

Also, for those that asked how many times I tried the milk splash yesterday: two. You get a cool result pretty much every time, and I actually posted the pictures of my first attempt. Because of the huge mess, I moved the cup to the center of the table for the 2nd attempt, and the light wasn't as good.

Again, I'm so sorry that I can't respond to all the comments, but maybe this little how-to will make up for it, right? ♥

Happy Wednesday!

You rock!! Thanks so much for the milk/water/denser/splishier/splashier lesson! I only have 11 minutes until I need to leave to pick up the kiddos...think I have time? But, don't answer that, please!!!

Yes, def. take the week off. And as I've said before no need to ever respond to my comments:) I don't have time to personally e-mail everyone on my blog so I leave people comments instead:). lol. Thanks for the tutorial...one question that you can answer next week or next year:). How do you enlarge your pics? Just wondering if we do it the same way or not...mine seem to lose some clarity when I enlarge them the way that I do...hmm..enjoy the catch up time!!

You are hereby given a pass to take as much time as needed to attend to items in the three dimensional world. My only hope is that you find a strong desire to drive 48 minutes so that you can meet me in real life and want to help clean a house to make it available for showing...just saying.. in case that was why you would not be leaving me fab comments..

umm what time should I expect you?????

Oh and just to further intrigue you with milk...
Annie Lebowitz once took a pic of Whoopi Goldberg in a bath tub full of milk. Milk is amazing to photograph even if it is not splashing...It is just perfect for portraits

No, you get no pass from me. JK But I do have a question that you can respond to whenever...did you have a helper, tripod? You know that I'm mostly alone, so I'm trying to figure out how to do such a trick by myself. I definitely want one of my own shots though...for sure!

I think I should take lessons from you !!!

LOVE IT! Lady you are crazy. In a super good way, I mean :D I am loving your creativity and willingness to clean up milk.... why not, right? How many times does milk get spilled on your table a week anyway... you really might as well have a little fun with it. :D Thanks for the laugh!!!! Keep up the splashy shots, you are on a roll.

Thank you for doing a little tut on this!!! ...I have 4 gallons of milk in my fridge right now... (insert sneaky little laugh!)

wow, i am going to have to try this! i clicked over from another blog and I'm so glad I did :)

I think the properties of milk and water are different not only in density, but also in viscosity. Whole milk is more viscous, because of all the lipids in it. Yeah?

This is so cool!!! I am so glad ashley posted the link on her scavenger hunt sunday. hopefully, i will get to try this sometime when the little boy is sleeping

This is so cool - not the sort of thing I would dare do when dh is around as he would go crazy about the mess - I need to recruit one of my teenagers lol.

okay I know that this is an older post but I was wondering what TV mode would be on my Sony A550 camera. I have M,S,A,P Auto. What would TV mode be on that? I want to try this... but couldn't figure out which one I would use. Thanks.
