beauty around me

It's funny. I was going to ring in the new year with this totally poignant post (which now sounds bit absurd since I actually had to google the word poignant to see if it even meant what I thought it meant). As it turns out I don't have a poignant thought in my head and should just stick to being me. I was going to share my feelings and frustrations about living in a medium-sized Midwestern city, that quite honestly does little to fuel my photographic creativity. But then I was going to inspirationally turn it around and write about how if you really looked, you could find beauty anywhere. Take off the blinders, dig a little deeper, see things in a different light... peel the onion ...

So after much reflection, I've realized...

When it comes to photographic inspiration, this medium-sized Midwestern city STINKS!

Having no cool, urban architecture or bustling city streets to photograph (my passion, although you'd never know it) STINKS!

Having no city night lights to photograph STINKS!

Having a beautiful, 68 degree day in January and having nowhere to go except the local (dead) flower garden STINKS!!

(Oh, and happy new year by the way!) :-)

So now for your viewing pleasure, some wrinkled up old flowers about 4 months past their prime.

But first...not to be outdone by the wrinkly flowers, may I present...... some shriveled up berries. (Let's all try to contain ourselves).

I'm not sure why I'm even posting these pictures. At first I secretly kind of liked them, but after the love goggles came off, it turns out they're not really doing much for me after all.

Well, good thing I didn't go with my original 'beauty around me' theme. Perhaps beauty can't be found in a local flower garden in January.

Or maybe it can.

You should make a calendar. I'd be your first customer. :-D Love that shot of the sun shining through the leaf! Beautiful.

I totally think these are beautiful...and I have lived in a medium midwestern town... there is beauty there and you found it... You are welcome to come to the big D.. lots of traffic lights and buildings and really interesting although getting there is the hard part. either the areas are crime ridden and I am not carrying thousands of dollars worth of equipment, or I sit in a traffic jam and lose my inspiration..LOL

You really had me going there for awhile-- I was like, "is she serious, cause these look amazing to me?!?!" For a dead garden, I am in awe of your captures.

I kinda want to toss sharp objects at you right now because these are so stinking good. I need to take pictures of pretty things stat!

Silly girl. These are awesome. I love the hazy light in those first few. I can't figure out if it's your light or your editing. Either way, fab. End of story.

Oh Karli!!!!! First off these are AWESOME!!!!!! Second I am SO with ya. Just yesterday which wasm in the 40`s and today 45 degrees. with sun. ( But today I should be rejoicing only am to tired from lack of sleep).

My boring little town sounds just like this, as I said yesterday I went to my local garden park nonly to have the same ... dead brown everything. Oh as you I got some berry shots. But when I was leaving Mr. Noisy crow wanted my attention so I took some not great shots of him.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And did I say it yet??? THESE Rock.

I bought some flowers today to shoot. I was so excited for my spoon shots.. But it seems like no one else liked them go check them out.....

Anyway..... Do not be dismayed your are great. and God sees beauty in all things.

Those are awesome. Totally understand the nothing to take a picture of even though I live in a large city. But winter is not fun for photographers.

I'm with Ashley...what are you talking about?? These are SO PRETTY! and elegant. Pinterest "pin" worthy right there. Beauty is what you make of it, not your surroundings. :)

Those are the best dead garden shots ever. ;)

No, really. I love the light shining through the leaf.

And the shriveled up berries.

(Not even any old train tracks where you are? I thought there were old trains everywhere...)

These are beautiful! I have the same problem... I go out and have these grand visions in my head of the gorgeous shots I will take and then I remember that A) I live in a crappy midwest town and B) I have a crazy toddler who cooperates on his terms. That being said, the best photographers "make it work" and you certainly do. I am always inspired by your posts and this one is no different! :) thanks for posting!

I live in a small sized midwestern town and totally understand where you're coming from. However, I personally think these shots are gorgeous. You are too hard on yourself - you have amazing talent and in the time that I've been visiting (um...stalking) your blog, I have yet to see a picture that isn't wonderful...

Well I think they are beautiful. And for the record I live in a TINY town, as in population 500 so imagine my photographic inspirations. Cows. Cows. Oh and yeah...cows.

these are beautiful! We should switch locations--I love shooting nature, but I live in LA! There are lots of bustling streets around me but I don't really photograph them, perhaps I should try!

You are crazzzzy talented, & your photos of dead flowers look BEAUTIFUL to me!

Hahaaa.. LOVED your honesty in this post, & how you were a tad bit negative! Seriously... it's refreshing! Lol) I mean that in the most postive way. Sometimes posts aren't real enough.

Happy New Year lady!

These are gorgeous! I especially love the withered hydrangeas. In fact, you may have inspired me to go shoot our withered hydrangeas as well!

I think you should head to the Old Market to get you through our crappy winter!

I think these are beautiful, Karli! The berries with the lovely bokeh in the background is my favorite one.

Your post cracked me up! I remember similar sentiments when we lived in the midwest last two years. But I wasn't able to get such gorgeous pictures like you! I get so excited when I see you've posted!. Thanks for the smile.

I personally think these are soooo lovely. The processing is perfect! I like trees without leaves and winter skies and you've showcased them wonderfully. "to everything there is a season". Happy 2012!

If I spot an edgy, urban oasis in this town I'll let you know asap. ;-)

Oh karli, you totally underestimate yourself! I think these are beautiful! Really. The last two are just gorgeous. And I chuckled when you made the comment on the word poignant. I have actually had similar thoughts running through my head and maybe will blog about it someday. Because I really don't have a poignant thought in this brain of mine either. I'm just me and I just need to learn to accept that I'm not a deep thinker or a great writer. I am who I am. :) Ok, there's my deep thought for the year!

I'd love for you to visit Naples (and for us to meet) and take gorgeous photos that you take of our gorgeous area. That would be fun!

Haha. You are too funny. Whatever. These pictures are beautiful. Not sure what your problem is girl?!

Um, these photos are gorgeous! But I am totally sick of trying to photograph NE right now, too LOL!

Karli the "past their prime" flower photos are beautiful! I understand living somewhere that has very little inspiration. They are all amazing!

Sigh -- I think we all feel that way at times.... our own back yard stinks for pics... if only I had so-and-so's yard/town/landscapes I'd never be at a loss... and the ones who live in our "perfect location" are also bored with their surroundings and wish for a tiny town, no city lights, open fields of nothing... :-D HUGS!!!

And despite your lack of inspiration, I'm lovin these! Especially the first... no, the 2nd, no wait... the third... oop! no, the fourth... um, maybe the fifth... or yep, the sixth... no, for sure the seventh!! Awe, shucks... love em all!! (hehe, but really, that 2nd one knocks my fuzzy llama socks off!!)

love and hugs!!

I think these are gorgeous. Beauty if all around us. Sometimes we just have to dig to find it. I live in a similar looking place, and sometimes it's really hard to find. Especially in winter. I definitely think you found it here!

Jessica Griz said...

Well, everyone's already said it... These are great! I love the dried hydrangeas! I took one of those the other day too. Don't worry you will get inspired soon...maybe some nice snow pictures...oh yeah...no snow for you right? ;)

Um. Yeah. So I think these are fantastic. *shaking you* Fantastic!

Beautiful pics, Karli...but maybe it's time to visit your cousin in California. Spring will be here soon, you know. :)

I am laughing! We have nada here in NJ. Everything is brown, dead & dried up. I hate winter. I count down the days til the first green grass & blossoms appear! I know the feeling! We do however have city streets not far from me and tons of architecture and many things to photograph. I joined a group that does local trips to shoot local towns and parks, etc... I can't wait for spring to do that! :)
