day 238: their first fad

Do you remember your first fad? I do. I even thought I'd share some that I participated in, or is that going to date me? Okay...here goes:

1. In elementary school we'd take safety pins, put colored beads on them, and pin them to our shoe laces. Anyone remember that one?

2. 7th grade - tie dye t-shirts.

3. Swatch watches. The more you had up your arm, the cooler you were. I only had two. But I did have a lovely assortment of Swatch guards. HA!

4. Friendship bracelets; the kind where you'd use different colored strings and tie knots in them over and over until you have a bracelet.

5. Tretorn tennis shoes. Mine had the grey swoosh.

6. Wearing two different colored socks on each foot, with the underneath sock showing a little.

7. Tapering your jeans. This is not the same as "skinny jeans." This is circa the '80s, where you'd fold the bottom of your jeans over and roll it up to make a tight, skinny cuff. This goes nicely with #6.

And so it begins for my boys. Collin is in 3rd grade, and Drew is in Kindergarten. Here's their first fad:

Does anyone know what these little bracelets are called? All I know is they are a must on the playground.

Three cheers for peer pressure! ;-)

ah they are called silly bandz, I guess they are the new "slap bracelet." We definitely did the safety pin thing, and I used to love making friendship bracelets

Well I can tell that we are both 35, I remember all of those. My girls are to young for their first fad but I am glad that you took me back to some of mine!

Hey hey. Looks like you NAILED that one. What did you do different? Share girly.

I did all of those fads too! Penny loafers with the penny too! Oh and when we rolled out jeans, we safety pinned them all the way up to the knee! And I only had one swatch and come to think of it I think it was a fake.

I've heard about those things...they just look silly (and by silly I mean stupid) to me. No offense...but you won't see me collecting them. Actually, that would be weird if a 28 year old woman was collecting silly bandz.

LOL! I *so* remember the safety pin with bead thing that you put on your shoelaces. Wasn't the idea to collect them from all your friends and the more you had, the better? I distinctly remember going to Ben Franklin with my mom so I could load up on supplies to COVER my shoelaces with these things. Man! Was I popular! haha!!!

The silly bands have struck over here, too.....peer pressure works even in homeschool! ;) p.s. WHY didn't I think to create them. Cha-ching! I'd be upgrading my camera! :)

I laughed at all your fads - I think I remember a few of those too :D
My kids love those darn things - Silly Bands I think they are called.
I blame those darn bands for at least 3 grocery store melt-downs. Darn them!!!!!

I just wanted to type DARN one more time. Watch out world - I might start tossing out some serious HARSH words soon :D

Oh wow. I'd forgotten about most of those!

Silly bands... silly alright. I'm thankful that my kids are still too young for trends - oh wait. Scratch that. My 2 year old freaked out in Babies R Us over Sketcher Twinkle Toes. /facepalm

Awe its the character bands! I love them too (im 13). They are the BEST. They do seem to be the new things for us. I love the princesses!

But they are called Character Bands :)

My 4 year old just yelled, "Silly bands!" when she saw this picture. It starts young.

I remember most of these. I especially remember getting my jeans folded in just so and the safety pins on the shoes. You would have been proud to call me a cool friend back then. :-)

I remember all those fads... I might have even participated in a few of them. ;)

I've never seen those things before! What do you do with them?

I seen a scary post on facebook about one that cut into a childs hand because they didn't take it off. I think their silly but harmless as long as they arent worn 24/7.. I just think that I used to do the same except when I was in middle school it was gel pen collections LOL wtf. :-)

We must be around the same age! Add the Swatch watches, rolled jeans, Tretorns, friendship bracelets and safety pins with a denim jacket with rhinestones or pins and you were very cool back in the mid-80s!

How bout perms & big bangs? Those were the days. Wish I would have saved my stone-washed jeans!

My first fad, I think, were these barrets that had ribbon attached to them, and the ribbon was waited down with beads. For a girl with short curly/fuzzy hair, this was not a good look.

My nieces are all over the silly bands!

I did the flash light deal on my page. its not as good as yours but it was fun lol :-)

We must be close to the same age, because I remember ALL those fads! How silly we must have looked!

One of my clients actually gave me one of those bands. It was a lion. Then, another client saw it laying on my computer and HAD to have it!

Oh my goodness --#s 3, 4, 5 &7!! I remember doing that. :)

Seriously, how do you make such ordinary things into "art"?! Apart from the photos of your kids, I love what you do with photos of every day things that you somehow transform into "art." How did you do the seemingly borderless look on your photo here?

Oh, I remember the safety pin fad!! I'm sure I made my own for my shoes just like Kathy. Lol!!! Also, it was quite an are to be able to roll your jeans...the tighter, the better. I laugh every time I look back at pictures. :) My kids are also into those bracelets. Wish I would have thought of it....

Too funny! Every one of the fads you listed... I took part in :) My son is only 8 months old, but I'm sure there are plenty of fads coming our way in the future! :)
