getting the flash off my camera - finally!

I must have been an extra good girl this year, because in addition to the big kahuna, my dad gave me a few miscellaneous items for my birthday (which is November 12th if you're wondering). :-)

I have been wanting to get my flash off my camera, so my dad got me 2 Flex TT5 PocketWizards, a giant relective umbrella and a light stand. I've only tried it a couple times, but I had to share the following picture of Livia.

Photobucket

(Besides the giant shadow on the wall - oops!, or the fact that I didn't quite get all her fingers in the shot), do you like it? I'm so pleased with the whole thing I can hardly stand it! I was wanting to get a really good shot of her to show you all, but I couldn't wait any longer. I was without my handy helpers when I took this picture, and it's the best I could get at the time.

An e-friend said something to me last week that I still have in my head: "Natural light is great until there isn't any." Isn't that true?! I love natural light, and still prefer it when it's available. But as I said in an earlier post, I've felt so limited by it lately. You can only go here at this time of day, or there at that time of day. And you might have to stand on the ugly side of the building because the light is good, and you can't stand on the cool side of the building because there's no light.

My intention was to get this off-camera flash setup to use outside. I have so many ideas in my head, and I can't wait to share them: Using it as a fill flash in a backlit situation, a soft flash on my kids at dusk while dragging the shutter to let some ambient light in, the ability to get a bright blue sky with puffy clouds, and still have their faces exposed correctly...just to name a few! (The problem is the weather is going to be getting cold soon, so I might have to play with it indoors, but that wasn't my original goal).

Anyway, I'm yammering on and on and all you really want to do is see pictures, right? :-) But I was really pleased with my new equipment and wanted to share. I'm also going to share what I learn about flash along the way, because I know a lot of us are afraid of it, and have been told that we're not "supposed" to like it.

(This picture was taken in a completely dark room, with the flash firing into an umbrella behind me and to my right a bit. The flash and umbrella were attached to a large stand. Also, it required hardly any processing).

Beautiful picture (and little girl!). You are so talented. This sentence makes me so jealous "Using it as a fill flash in a backlit situation, a soft flash on my kids at dusk while dragging the shutter to let some ambient light in, the ability to get a bright blue sky with puffy clouds, and still have their faces exposed correctly." I need to take a photography class. Keep up the great work and keep sharing with us!

I really didn't mean to insinuate that I was not interested in the light post! Honest! Just too few brain cells turned on this time of night to be able to read it like an educated person and actually understand it! Glad I gave you a laugh!

That is beautiful!! :D You learn all about flash, and then teach me about it, k? ;)

Your dad gives the best presents. :)

Karli this is really really great. Especially for just trying it out. I know flash is something I want to get into eventually, but right now I'm forcing myself to go all natural light until I can rock it no matter what I'm handed. Then... when I get my speedlight sometime next year... I will come crying to you! :) Great job my friend!

You're so excited! :) I'm excited FOR you! Gorgeous photo!

And I'd like to repeat exactly what Adeena said above:

"You learn all about flash, and then teach me about it, k? ;)"

Seriously. Okay?

OH! Friend! Ya did good here! Well done.. but I think your Dad needs to adopt me. Enough already with the little gifts for no reason.. I can not get anymore green with envy!

Okay CLEARLY you didn't send my Dad the memo you promised...perhaps your Dad would like to adopt another daughter? LOL

Pics are wonderful (and you always have such cute subjects!). Have fun with your new accessories!

Your little lady is growing up K- look at her! Are you hiding the leg restraints to keep her in position? How did you convince her not to knock over the umbrella stand??? hehe! Love your setup that you've just acquired - way to go Daddy! Is he looking to adopt??

Someone is having a nice b'day this year. :-)

Glad I'm not the only one who cuts off fingers sometimes. I get so focused on the face that I forget to look at the bottom of the frame. This happened to me the other day on a photo shoot. I just pretend like I did it on purpose. Artistic expression, right? ;-)
