party of three: 4/52

Are you ready for a real doozy this week? I won't tell you how many pictures I took to get this shot, but I seriously have one keeper. (Sort of). It's going to have to be a keeper, because we have family coming in from out of the country today, so last night was my only chance.

Photobucket

Instead of some outtakes, how about some reasons why Super Target is not a Super place for pictures of your kids. (Are my little pointers helpful in any way...or are they just boring)? If I should just post my picture and be on my way, feel free to tell me. ;-)

1. Even though fluorescent lights look bright, the camera reads it as very low light. So that's bummer #1.

2. For close-up shots of my kids, I can't stand my ISO any higher than 1,000. (I'm trying to find a noiseware program that I really love). This contributes to the bad picture quality; but otherwise there wouldn't be enough light.

3. My actual settings for this picture: f/2.8; ss 1/160; ISO 1,000

4. My dream settings for this situation: f/5.6 (at least); ss 1/500; ISO 100-200 (But you can't do that because your picture would be super underexposed).

This picture might not be a masterpiece, but it is 100% real life. We are at Super Target at least 4 times a week, and you'll see my kids looking just like this. :-)

Oh! I almost forgot. One more thing to share. You might be wondering why in past weeks I've been yammering on about having a picture of the week; as in one picture. That's because I'd like to print a book of 52 pictures at the end of the year. Another reason: I just started a Flickr photostream, and having my Party of Three pictures so neatly in little rows makes me feel incredibly organized. (insert hysterical laughter here)

Check it out!

Seriously...how cool is this going to be after 52 weeks? :-)

Not to worry, parents and grandparents. Although my Flickr photostream is private, (I don't need one more thing to worry about keeping up on - ha!) I won't post anything on my stream that you haven't already seen on my blog.

And with that, I'm off for the weekend to be with family. Have a great one! ♥

You are stinkin' cute! I love you and this photo! Who cares if they are techinically perfect when they are so delicious and precious!

You take beautiful photos! This is your family blog and not a professional photo site no need for reasoning behind anything!!! YOU ROCK!!!!

Love you!!! enjoy your time with family!!!

Oh, Karli - that's the reason I love all your shots! Because they are 100% real life.

Have you tried the DPP program that (I assume) came with your camera? I really like it for noise reduction. It's the only one I use now. If I get a chance this weekend, I'll send you a before and after of a seriously underexposed photo using nothing but the DPP program.

When I looked at the picture I actually didn't see anything wrong....Hmmm, maybe that's whats always wrong with my photos, lol! I think it's great though and good idea you have with the 52 weeks!

I don't know what you are talkin' about! I love that shot!!! I think it looks great. I think I've just sort of accepted that I won't be happy with indoor shots unless there's lots of natural light. It's frustrating, though.

YES your pointers are helpful. : )

And I really like this shot too. Looks like life to me!

I just got Imagenomic Noiseware and I love it.

That is a fantastic shot of your 3 kiddos and I have to say that you are doing a marvelous job of foccusing on portrait photography of your kids more! You will be SO glad you have these!

You know how much I love this photo? I'm willing to visit and comment on this using my cell phone while waiting in a hospital parking lot! This is so real life and if I was a mom I hope I'd have the guts to capture memories like this - real every day life! A treasure for your book! I think these will be the ones you look back on and love that you captured the moment.

Yes I love the tips and comments you make - it makes the memories come even more to life. But if you are running short on time, then don't worry - post the pic and run! :)

I love everyday shots. The memories are remarkable, many years down the road. One other thing I thought of: the kiddos are looking in 3 different directions, but that, too, is typical life.

hugs,
Sharon

You know I love the real life shots and your book will be so great after the 52 weeks are over!

Now I know one thing Super Target doesn't have - great studio lighting. ;-)

I should add that you made the most of the Target lighting. Your picture looks good!

Oh goodness Karli. I'm on the other side of the fence. If I have that tool I'm gonna use it! I'd much rather raise my ISO than drop my aperture or ss. My 5DII has such a pretty grain, not the ugly noise that my Rebel has. I crank mine well over 2000 without a second thought.

I'm impressed you got your white balance so perfect!

SUper Target... Yes a fun store but it can't be easy to 'good' shot with those horrendous bright flourescent lights!! haha!(Uh did I spell that right)
Good idea about the book... we did a 6 month book for our relatives at christmas time and it went over well. Going to do the same thing this year, but not as perfect as yours will be :)
Happy weekend with the family!!

It's a super cute photo!I have several from shopping trips but I cannot get one photo with all the kids in it together, lol. I like the commentary along with the pictures!

Your pointers ALWAYS help me. I personally think that photo turned out great! I love it. I'm going to do a book at the end of the year too... but, it will have a picture of each day. :D

Target is GREAT!!! Even better you have a SUPER TARGET!!! I am jealous!!! I think this is a great shot. Your kids will thank you later in life for doing a 52 photos of them in one year. I wouldn't mind trying to do this. Thanks for inspiring. Have a good one!!!

Please don't stop the commentary, I love it!! I love that you captured everyday life. It's hard to do that sometimes when you want a good picture. But the memories you will have are worth it.

Your little pointers? Me likey. ;)

What a great idea for a photobook!! Now I really wish I had started that challenge... oh well. 2012 for sure. ;)

And our "Zellers" stores in Canada have been bought out by Target... hopefully the one we go to will change rather than shut down. ;)

Natalie said...

So definitely cannot see a THING wrong with that photo...and I know that taking a picture in our local walmart myself SUCKS. PERIOD. LOL! You know what you're doing! My camera would be unbearably noisy at ISO 1000 but your 1000 looks like my 400 almost! GEEZ! ;)

I love how you captured a 'natural/true' moment though! YAY!

Ahhh, we love Target! I haven't tried to take a photo yet in there but I'll definitely keep your post in mind for the future. I agree with some of the others, I don't see ANYTHING wrong with this picture!

Thanks for stopping by to tell me about your near Diet Coke incident. I love to laugh and to make others laugh (even though I prefer to do so when there's not carbonated beverages involved).

love this.. I see no real noise. And your kids look very happy. I just started using noiseware community and that seems to work in a pinch.

I am to afraid to take my camera in target or any other public place... Not that I wouldn't take a billion pictures but my husband who is camera shy (go figure.) would be mortified. the little girl is always so photogenic. great photo.

Nat said...

Have a great weekend. I love my target too. And great shot who cares if it is not technically right it is life. :)

Part of me really wants to read everyone's comments but let's be honest...regardless of the quality (which I don't see anything wrong with), I think the picture is great. It's real and years down the road, your kids will still remember this project. They'll laugh and tell stories of all the fun moments they had with mom taking pictures together. In all seriousness, that's all that counts.

Such a great shot, life is the best thing to take photos of. Have a lovely weekend and enjoy your beautiful family.

It's great. Love it. Love even more that you took your camera into Target. So something I would do while my husband rolls his eyes and tries to hide because I'm "that mom" that just took my Nikon into Target.

Your photo is perfect. I'm so amazed how well it looks with an iso that high. You do so great at adjusting your setting Correctly. I had under/over exposed photos :D I love how you show realness in your photos, not just a bunch of posed photos. this means the most! flickr is awesome ;-) add me on there if you like!

You know, that's a great idea! I totally flopped on the "picture per day" thing, but I could do a picture of the week thing.

I love Tiny Tornado's sweet little smile... she's too incredibly cute. She looks happy to be in the toy aisle. :)

Such a cute shot! I love how none of them are paying any attention to you! lol! Great capture!

I'm doing 52 weeks of photos, too. I hadn't thought of printing a book of them at the end of the year...good idea. I did make a photo book for my son's first birthday last week. Great pictures! My house is super dark also and I have SUCH a hard time getting good pictures inside.

Hi Karli,
I hope you don't mind, but I'm quite the sneak... I found your Photobucket account and subscribed... (found it by clicking on one of your photos.) Do you mind? I've noticed that you don't post every photo that you upload. If you'd rather that I didn't "spy" I understand. :-p

This is an ADORABLE shot!!!! You have inspiried me to do this project myself. I know my pictures won't be as wonderful as yours are, but I am excited to see the result at the end of the year. You rock!
