good friday traditions (part I)

I wanted to start the week by sharing a family tradition we do with our kids to explain the story of Easter. This is the time of year we celebrate Jesus' death and resurrection, and this project helps our kids visualize the story. We make salt dough to symbolize Jesus' tomb, and we'll place Him in the tomb on Friday of this week. We'll check back to see if He is still there on Saturday (He will be), and we'll check again on Sunday (He won't be). I'm going to split this post into two parts so it doesn't get too long. Sound good?

First, the recipe (for 2 tombs):
8 cups flour
3 cups salt
3 cups water
2 TBSP. oil

This little project couldn't be easier:
1. Add all the ingredients into a large bowl and mix together.
2. Form the dough into a hill shape (for the tomb).
3. Make a little opening in one side of your hill (to fit Jesus inside).
4. Bake the dough at 250 degrees for 4-5 hours.
5. Let it cool, then paint.

Guess who wasn't interested in making salt dough?

We called in for backup.

But no one ever actually catches the Tornado.

Fast forward 4 hours, and here's what we have so far.

Be sure to come back (hopefully Wednesday) for Part II. We will be painting our tombs, finding rocks to be placed in front of the opening of the tomb, and making Jesus's to be placed inside. Hope to see you then! :-)

I saw recently where they put a caterpillar in the tomb {not real of course} and on Sunday it is replaced with a butterfly before the kiddos check. I like that idea.

I think I'll do this with my kiddos. Thanks for posting!

Love it!!! we are inviting our neighborhood friends.. ( there is a ton of kids on our street) to a seder dinner.. Although we are doing it on Friday morning, and reading the story from John.

My girls love the Passover meal.. that they do not really eat.. although one of my kids loves matza and bitter herbs!

Love this! We don't really have a tradition, we just believe. Make sense? Not to me, I'm really sad. Everyone does cool things...It's tough with a 16, 13 and 9 yr old.. or is it? We also go to my in laws who are not believers so that's even harder on such a special day for us.

What a wonderful idea! I have a feeling my tornado would not be so interested either. But I love traditions, and I love teaching my child about such meaningful subjects! Great idea, thank you!!

I wish I could have seen this a few weeks ago so I could have done it with my CCD 3rd graders that I teach. I've filed this away for next year though, because I think they would really like it! Hope you're doing well!

I love this idea. I saw the resurrection cookies earlier. I have never done either project but think it's time to start. My 5 yr old is starting to get it. Thanks for the idea, Karli!

Thanks for such a great idea! I have been trying to think of a good & fun way to reinforce the real meaning of Easter to my 5-year old. I think you may have given me just the idea I need.

Wow! I really admire you for instilling the faith and love for God in your children's hearts! Such a good beginning to give them! I read the Bible to our son a lot. He loves it! This is such a cute and fun tradition! :D

What a *cool* idea!! I even want to do that -- and my fur-kid wouldn't care less either! hehe!!

I love the memories your capturing while you're teaching your children the *real* meaning of Easter, and leading them down the *right* path! Where you lead, they will follow! And just so you know, you all are still in my prayers!
